Gryphon – Red Queen To Gryphon Three is one of the most distinctive albums to emerge from the British progressive rock scene of the 1970s. Originally released in 1974, Gryphon's third album takes the idea of a chess match as the framework for four extended instrumental pieces, allowing the band to move freely between symphonic prog, English folk and medieval and Renaissance-inspired music.
Gryphon's unusual instrumental palette is central to the album's character. Bassoon, crumhorn and recorders sit alongside electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion, creating music that can shift from delicate acoustic passages to elaborate progressive rock arrangements within the same composition.
The four pieces – “Opening Move”, “Second Spasm”, “Lament” and “Checkmate” – form a continuous-feeling musical journey, with themes developing and returning as the imaginary game progresses. The result is an adventurous yet highly melodic album and one of the key recordings in Gryphon's catalogue.
This Music On Vinyl edition is pressed on 180-gram translucent blue vinyl and is strictly limited to 750 individually numbered copies.
