Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1968, celebrated for its exceptional musicianship, ambitious songwriting, and distinctive blend of hard rock and progressive rock. The group’s classic lineup—Geddy Lee on bass, keyboards, and vocals, Alex Lifeson on guitar, and Neil Peart on drums and lyrics—became one of the most respected and influential trios in rock history. Rush built its reputation on complex compositions, philosophical themes, and a constant drive to push beyond conventional rock structures.

2112, released in 1976, is one of the band’s defining albums and a landmark in progressive rock. It marked a major turning point in Rush’s career, establishing their artistic identity and proving that their more adventurous, conceptual direction could connect with a wide audience. The album combines heavy guitar-driven rock with intricate arrangements, science-fiction themes, and a bold sense of scale.

The centerpiece of the record is the side-long title suite, “2112,” a futuristic story set in a dystopian society where individuality and creative expression have been suppressed. Through this epic composition, Rush explores themes of freedom, conformity, and resistance, giving the album a dramatic and visionary character. The second half of the record balances the grand concept of the title track with shorter songs that still showcase the band’s lyrical depth and musical precision.

Over the years, 2112 has come to be regarded as one of Rush’s most important releases and a cornerstone of 1970s progressive rock. It remains a powerful example of the band’s ambition, technical skill, and willingness to challenge the limits of mainstream rock music.
