Originally released by Tower Records in 1967, The Above Ground Sound of Jake Holmes was the debut album by the American singer, guitarist and songwriter. Its sparse instrumentation and uneasy atmosphere distinguish it from the more elaborately produced psychedelic records of the period, creating a stark form of folk rock that still sounds unusual and intensely personal.
The album was recorded without a drummer, with Holmes joined by guitarist Tim Irwin and bassist Rick Randall. Two electric guitars, bass and voice form the entire musical framework, yet the musicians create a surprisingly varied sound through rapid acoustic-style strumming, reverberating lead lines, shifting bass patterns and sudden changes in intensity. The absence of percussion gives the songs a floating, intimate quality while increasing their underlying tension.
“Lonely,” “Did You Know” and “Too Long” introduce Holmes’ distinctive combination of introspective songwriting and tightly wound guitar arrangements. “Genuine Imitation Life” moves into darker social observation, while “Hard to Keep My Mind on You” and “Signs of Age” reveal the melodic side of his writing.
The album’s best-known composition is Holmes’ original recording of “Dazed and Confused.” Its descending bass figure, brooding vocal and disorienting instrumental passages would later inspire versions by The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin. Heard in its original setting, however, the song belongs naturally to the album’s shadowy, drumless sound world. This Cosmic Rock vinyl edition restores all ten tracks from one of the most singular American psychedelic folk albums of the late 1960s.
