LPCDreissues: Looking forward to the past

Originally released by Mercury Records in 1971, the self-titled debut by Bullangus is a powerful example of early American hard rock developing beyond its blues-based foundations. The New York six-piece combined muscular twin-guitar riffs, Hammond organ, forceful rhythms and the soulful lead vocals of Frankie Previte, creating a dense sound with elements of psychedelia, progressive rock and heavy blues.

“Run Don’t Stop” opens the album with driving guitars and an immediate hard-rock attack, while “Mother’s Favorite Lover (Margaret)” adds prominent organ and an unusually funky groove. “Uncle Duggie’s Fun Bus Ride” balances melodic vocal harmonies with adventurous instrumental passages, and the extended “A Time Like Ours” reveals the band’s more progressive side through shifting dynamics and interlocking guitar work.

The second side stretches into longer and more varied performances. “Miss Casey” develops through heavy riffs, organ flourishes and multiple changes of direction, while “Pot of Gold” is one of the record’s most melodic and accessible songs. The acoustic “Cy” provides a reflective contrast before “No Cream for the Maid” closes the album with a dramatic mixture of hard rock, blues and progressive complexity.

Although Bullangus remained largely overlooked during their original lifetime, their debut has become increasingly valued by collectors of obscure early-1970s heavy rock. This Survival Research vinyl edition makes the band’s distinctive first album available again in its original eight-track configuration.
