Originally released by United Artists in 1971, Embryo's Rache was the second album by Christian Burchard’s Munich-based collective and one of the defining records of early German jazz rock. Arriving only a year after Opal, it retained the debut’s psychedelic intensity while opening the group’s music towards jazz improvisation, unusual rhythms and influences drawn from beyond Western rock.
Christian Burchard and multi-instrumentalist Edgar Hofmann were joined by musicians including flautist Hansi Fischer, Roman Bunka and keyboard player Jimmy Jackson, also known as Tabarin Man. Flute, saxophone, violin, organ, Mellotron and layered percussion interact throughout the album, producing a sound that is exploratory and unpredictable but still held together by powerful recurring themes.
“Tausendfüßler” begins with an urgent flute-led groove before moving into increasingly free instrumental exchanges. The extended “Time,” divided into “You Can’t Wait” and “Eva’s Nuvola,” combines hypnotic repetition with shifting jazz-rock textures, while “Revenge” moves through darker and more forceful passages. On the second side, the eleven-minute “Spain Yes, Franco Finished” provides the album’s most expansive performance, bringing together post-Coltrane jazz, psychedelic rock and the early ethnic influences that would become central to Embryo’s identity.
Embryo's Rache captures the group at the beginning of its transformation from an experimental Krautrock outfit into one of Europe’s most adventurous world-fusion ensembles. This remastered vinyl edition restores the album in a reproduction of its original gatefold sleeve.
