Notturno presents Goblin’s atmospheric score for the 1983 Italian espionage thriller directed by Giorgio Bontempi. Created during a period when the group was moving away from the aggressive, horror-driven progressive rock of its best-known 1970s recordings, the soundtrack offers a more restrained blend of synthesizers, bass, guitar, saxophone and carefully controlled rhythms.
The central “Nocturne” theme immediately establishes the album’s nocturnal mood, combining a memorable guitar-led melody with the sleek tension of an international spy film. “Bass Theme” introduces a darker rhythmic pulse, while “Landing Strip” and “Helycopter” move between electronic suspense, jazz-inflected passages and expansive cinematic textures.
The recording features Maurizio Guarini on keyboards, Fabio Pignatelli on bass and guitar, Walter Martino on drums and Antonio Marangolo on saxophone. Their performances give the score a polished early-1980s character without losing the unusual melodic ideas and instrumental precision associated with Goblin.
Originally issued on vinyl in 1983, Notturno became one of the more difficult Goblin soundtracks to obtain. This special Record Store Day 2017 edition marked its first official vinyl reissue and adds three previously unavailable alternate takes of “Nocturne.” Pressed on translucent acid-green vinyl and supplied with a large illustrated insert, it is an attractive edition for collectors of Goblin, Italian progressive rock and cult European film music.
