OZ Days Live 1973 brings together two radically different currents from the Japanese underground: the overwhelming psychedelic rock of Les Rallizes Dénudés and the free-form electro-acoustic improvisation of The Taj-Mahal Travellers. The recordings originate from the Oz Last Days festival, staged in Tokyo during the autumn of 1973 in connection with the closure of the influential Oz Rock Café.
Formed in Kyoto around guitarist and vocalist Takashi Mizutani, Les Rallizes Dénudés developed an uncompromising sound built from simple bass patterns, pounding rhythms and intensely amplified electric guitar. Their four untitled performances occupy the first side, gradually moving from loose instrumental passages into dense layers of distortion, feedback and hypnotic repetition.
The Taj-Mahal Travellers offer a striking contrast on the second side. Founded by violinist and experimental composer Takehisa Kosugi, the collective combined electric violin, double bass, percussion, voices, winds and electronic processing in spontaneous performances without conventional song structures. Echoing vocal calls, sustained strings, irregular percussion and extensive delay effects create a slowly evolving and distinctly cosmic sound environment.
The source material first appeared as part of the exceptionally rare Japanese OZ Days Live compilation in 1973. This Alternative Fox edition extracts six untitled performances by its two best-known participating groups, presenting the heavy acid-rock attack of Les Rallizes Dénudés alongside the open-ended experimental music of The Taj-Mahal Travellers.
