Originally released by CBS in 1972, Power On! was the second and final album by the German jazz-rock group From. Formed around musicians active in the Frankfurt jazz scene, the quintet created a highly focused fusion of jazz improvisation, progressive rock, funk and the exploratory freedom associated with early Krautrock.

The line-up features Gustl Mayr on tenor and soprano saxophones, Klaus Göbel on Hammond organ, piano and electric piano, Dieter von Goetze on bass, Kurt Bong on drums and percussion, and Viktor F. Belgrove on congas, steel drum, percussion and vocals. With no guitarist in the group, the music is shaped by Göbel’s keyboards and Mayr’s saxophone, supported by a remarkably fluid rhythm section.

The first side is occupied entirely by the extended “Festival Rock / Use the Bridge.” Moving through driving electric-piano passages, powerful saxophone improvisation, shifting rhythms and spacious ensemble sections, the piece demonstrates the band’s ability to develop long-form compositions without losing momentum.

“Catalyst” combines Hammond-led jazz rock with muscular drumming, African and Caribbean percussion and an unusual vocal interlude. The closing “Fog in Rossert” begins with a deep, funky bass pattern before opening into lyrical saxophone melodies, atmospheric keyboards and increasingly abstract group interplay.

With its excellent recording quality, imaginative arrangements and tightly connected performances, Power On! stands alongside the most accomplished European jazz-rock albums of the early 1970s. This first official vinyl reissue presents the original three-track album on 180g virgin vinyl with its original artwork.
