Originally released by RCA Victor in 1973, Riff-Raff was the first official album by the British progressive jazz-rock group formed around keyboardist Tommy Eyre. Bringing together musicians with backgrounds in blues, soul, jazz and progressive rock, the record occupies a distinctive space between tightly constructed songs and more open-ended instrumental exploration.
The album is driven by Eyre’s Hammond organ, electric piano and flute, together with Pete Kirtley’s expressive guitar work and Roger Sutton’s fluid bass playing. The opening “Your World” establishes the group’s combination of melodic songwriting and intricate musicianship, while “For Every Dog” and “Little Miss Drag” introduce bluesier, more direct elements. “Dreaming” and “Times Lost” reveal a gentler and more atmospheric side of the band.
The extended closing piece “La Même Chose” provides the album’s most expansive progressive jazz-rock performance, allowing the musicians to move through shifting rhythms, keyboard passages and instrumental exchanges. Although Riff-Raff remained relatively obscure during their original lifetime, their debut has since attracted considerable interest among collectors of adventurous early-1970s British rock. This limited coloured-vinyl edition presents the album once again in its original seven-track configuration.
