Everything has a beginning, right? And before the classic, much imitated proto-grunge garage band sound of Crazy Horse was even a concept or option, Neil Young walked into an ill-attended show by the band he had discovered on this very record.
The Rockets, yet another maverick project from the amazing White Whale label, the timeless, hypnotic, crazy yet understated groove of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina captivated Young, Danny Whittens out there ELECTRIC guitar, like a shower of sparks, touched a nerve in a man whose own contributions to out there guitar are not too shabby either!...with singer/songwriter/guitarists George and Leon Whitsell and the eerie electric violin of Bobby Notkoff completing the lineup, here we have another classic band who should have made it.
Just take a listen to this, their sole album, produced by Barry Goldberg, organist with another shoulda-been, The Electric Flag, and say it aint so! Fate had another plan for The Rockets, though, as Neil Young insisted he needed a road band just like The Rockets and recruited Danny Billy and Ralph, who rode of into history as 3/4 of the newly dubbed Neil Young and Crazy Horse, making in short order the classic "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" (with Bobby Notkoff as a prominent guest player). The rest you know, or darn well should you bloody fools!
