An album from 1970 which has recently become highly collectable,and that merges several musical genres to considerable effect.Originally released on the Colossus label (CS-1007), this eponymouseffort from Baltimore outfit Maypole mixes psych with heavy rockand adds some prog sub-themes to leaven the mix. Full ofinteresting ideas and some fabulous Hendrix-inspired lead guitarfrom founder Dennis Tobell, this album of original compositions wasrecorded at New York's A&R Studios by Pat Perticone.The band's name came from a Maypole erected in New England indefiance of Puritan laws designed to stifle life in 17th centuryAmerica, and the album's lengthy liner notes, written by drummerand co-founder, Paul Welsh, contain what, in essence, is the group's"mission statement". "Maypole intends to combine the techniques ofliterature in lyrics and structure with the feeling generated by ourmusic to communicate the "real" to an unlimited audience". Giventhat the album is famous for being rare, clearly the band's desire toreach an "unlimited audience" was not achieved, which isunfortunate as the record is well recorded, musically interestingand reminiscent of other heavy psych outfits such as Bubble Puppy,Ill Wind and Neighbourhood Childr'n.Track Listing1.
