Shaft is the groundbreaking 1971 soundtrack album composed, arranged, produced and performed by Isaac Hayes for Gordon Parks' classic film of the same name. One of the defining recordings of early-'70s soul and funk, it transformed the possibilities of the film soundtrack and became the most commercially successful album released by Stax Records.
Hayes created a remarkably cinematic mixture of deep funk, orchestral soul, jazz, psychedelic textures and extended instrumental passages. Working with musicians from The Bar-Kays and The Isaac Hayes Movement, he combined wah-wah guitar, strings, brass, electric keyboards and hypnotic rhythm sections into a sound that became inseparable from the emerging blaxploitation cinema of the period.
The instantly recognisable Theme From Shaft became an international hit and earned Hayes the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making him the first African-American composer to win an Oscar in a non-acting category. The soundtrack also received major Grammy recognition and became a landmark in the history of both soul music and film scoring.
Beyond the famous title theme, the album contains a remarkable variety of music. Ellie's Love Theme provides a lush orchestral contrast to the hard funk of Be Yourself and No Name Bar, while Soulsville combines Hayes' deep vocal delivery with socially conscious lyrics. The monumental Do Your Thing, extending across almost an entire LP side, develops into one of Hayes' greatest extended funk workouts.
Originally issued as a double album on Enterprise in 1971, Shaft remains one of the essential recordings of 1970s soul, funk and soundtrack music and an enormously influential source for later hip-hop, soul and cinematic funk.
