Released in 1970, Sirio 2222 was the debut album by Il Balletto Di Bronzo and documents the group before the major personnel and stylistic changes that produced their celebrated second album, Ys. This original line-up featured Marco Cecioni on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lino Ajello on lead guitar, Michele Cupaiuolo on bass and Giancarlo Stinga on drums.
The album occupies a fascinating position between late-1960s Italian beat, psychedelic rock, blues and the emerging progressive and hard-rock sounds of the new decade. Ajello’s heavily distorted guitar dominates songs such as “Un Posto,” “Neve Calda” and “Girotondo,” supported by forceful drumming, melodic bass lines and Cecioni’s expressive Italian-language vocals.
The record becomes increasingly ambitious as it develops. “Meditazione” introduces harpsichord, flute and orchestral textures, while the extended “Incantesimo” moves through bluesy and psychedelic passages. The closing “Missione Sirio 2222” is the album’s centrepiece: a lengthy science-fiction-themed suite combining acoustic sections, hypnotic rhythms, dramatic guitar work and atmospheric experimentation. This remastered papersleeve edition reproduces the character of the original vinyl release in compact-disc format.
