Here is a welcome slice of pop history that showcases the work of excellent British vocalist and band leader Neil Christian. His group The Crusaders took up the sword way back in 1960, and after many years of struggle were rewarded when the single ‘That’s Nice’ became a Number 14 UK chart hit in 1966. It was also highly successful in Germany.
This 30 track definitive CD anthology covers the Christian era from 1962 to 1969. Among the A and B-sides and EP tracks are several boasting outstanding guitar work from Jimmy Page, who joined the Crusaders as a teenager. (Page plays a storming solo on the 1966 B-side ‘I Like It’ and is also heard on the Joe Meek produced ‘Get A Load Of This’ from 1963). The Crusaders boasted several other great guitarists during their heyday, notably Ritchie Blackmore and Mick Abrahams. The set also includes two rare tracks with German lyrics. This all adds to the fascination among fans for the work of a pioneering beat group and its unfailingly nice young singer.
