This special low priced 4CD celebrates one of the most acclaimed line-ups in jazz history: a quintet led by Miles Davis playing along side the great John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, between 1955-56. Recorded in part at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey and Columbia studios in NY, and in part live at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, Davis, who was in his thirties at the time, had just entered a period of incredible artistic maturity. Behind the omnipresent glasses, was a diffident anti-hero: proud and provocative. He spoke to the audience only through his trumpet, and turned his back on it during the other musicians' solos. Thanks to his extraordinary genius jazz music was completely revolutionized. Line-up: Miles Davis: trumpet; John Coltrane: tenor saxophone; Red Garland: piano; Paul Chambers: bass; Philly Joe Jones: drums
