Originally released in 2013, the self-titled debut by Tokyo’s Kikagaku Moyo introduced the group’s distinctive fusion of psychedelic rock, acid folk, Krautrock repetition and Indian classical influence. Across five extended pieces, acoustic and electric guitars mingle with sitar, theremin, fluid percussion and softly drifting vocals.
The album was recorded during the group’s earliest period, not long after the musicians had begun performing improvised music on the streets of Tokyo. That spontaneous background remains central to the record: themes often emerge gradually from loose ensemble playing before developing into hypnotic grooves, distorted guitar passages or tranquil folk melodies.
“Can You Imagine Nothing?” opens with delicate guitar and weightless vocals before expanding into a more forceful psychedelic performance. “Zo No Senaka” combines a circular rhythm with sitar and increasingly dense instrumental interplay, while “Tree Smoke” moves between pastoral calm and heavier electric textures.
The second side begins with “Lazy Stoned Monk,” a slow and meditative piece shaped by acoustic guitar, sitar and understated percussion. “Dawn” closes the album with a patient, gradually intensifying arrangement in which shimmering guitar, repetitive rhythm and wordless vocals create a dreamlike finale.
Rawer and more openly improvisational than the group’s later recordings, Kikagaku Moyo captures the elemental sound of the band at its beginning. This Guruguru Brain vinyl edition restores the complete five-track debut album.
