Original MINT /NEVER PLAYED copy of the group's second LP from 1972 Deerfield were a Texas group whose music sat at the crossroads of rural rock, psychedelia, country-flavoured jamming and late-1960s counterculture songcraft. Their sound was earthy rather than polished, with guitars, vocals and loose ensemble playing giving the music the feeling of a band caught in its natural habitat.
Released in 1972 on Flat Rock Records, Live captures Deerfield outside the confines of the studio, stretching their songs into longer, freer performances. Compared with their studio work, this recording has a more open and spontaneous character, allowing the band’s country-rock roots and psychedelic instincts to breathe.
The album moves from the melodic warmth of Mimmi Trueheart to the extended groove of Funky Bluegrass Honky Country Jive, while Maybe Today brings a gentler, reflective mood. Side B is dominated by two long-form pieces: Do You Believe In Words and Days Of Dreams, both of which show the group leaning into its jam-oriented, exploratory side.
Issued as Flat Rock Records FRS 2, this scarce private-press LP has become a desirable item for collectors of US rural psych, country rock and underground early-1970s American rock.
