Gene Clark was one of the founding members, singers and principal songwriters of The Byrds up until disagreements within the band (and a dislike of touring) made him step out and pursue a solo career. His body of work stands out as a beacon in the Country Rock genre, even if he didn't have the commercial success of the band he left. No Other from 1972 was reviled by press and public alike for sounding too commercial, but thanks to the beauty of hindsight we can honestly say that this was a visionary recording. According to Allmusic: What it adds up to is a sprawling, ambitious work that brought elements of country, folk, jazzed-out gospel, blues, and trippy rock to bear on a song cycle that reflects the mid-'70s better than anything from that time, yet sounds hauntingly timely even now.
