Carlos Santana started his band as free-form jam band in San Francisco and added latin music to the rock grooves, where as most jam bands were influenced by eastern music & blues.
This album, recorded in may 1969, was destined to be a major release; after their show at Woodstock, the band got signed by Columbia who released the album in September.
Musicians on the record incl. Michael Shrieve (drums) & Greg Rolie (bass, keyboards, vocals); the latter went to form Journey in 1973.
First single "Jingo" (cover from a Nigerian artist) didn't create much interest at first, but "Evil Ways" (sung by Gregg Rolie, who later formed Journey) became a U.S. Top 10 hit. The rest is history!"
