Ash Ra Tempel were a German krautrock / psychedelic rock band from West Berlin, mainly active in the early to mid-1970s. Built around guitarist Manuel Göttsching, with bassist Hartmut Enke and early member Klaus Schulze, they specialised in long, free-form, spacey improvisations that blended rock, primitive electronics and hallucinatory atmospheres, and they went on to become one of the defining names of the krautrock movement.

Schwingungen (“Vibrations”) is their second studio album, released in 1972 on the Ohr label. Compared to the debut’s wild, guitar-driven space jams, it shifts toward a mixture of psychedelic rock, loose blues structures and cosmic soundscapes, with a stronger emphasis on vocals and saxophone. The record is split into two conceptual sides:“Light” / “Darkness” on side A – a slow, blues-soaked, sorrowful and steadily intensifying trip, often likened to a heavily drugged-out spin on Peter Green–era Fleetwood Mac.

“Schwingungen” on side B – an extended, slowly unfolding piece that moves from turbulent, noisy explorations into calmer, more celestial sections, frequently described as a deeply immersive, mind-expanding journey.
