Grupa 220 (Group 220) were formed in 1966 in former Yugoslavia bymembers of the bands Ehosi and Jutarnje Zvijezde (Morning Stars). It was common for the new Yugoslavian bands to adopt the musicalstyles of the British and American bands of the day, influenceswhich are in abundant evidence here!Within 3 months of its formation, Grupa 220 had its first hit andrapidly became one of the most popular bands in the country, aswell as being the first band in Yugoslavia to release a long-playingrecord (Nasi Dani) in 1968! The group also supported visiting foreignacts such as Marmalade, Status Quo and Mungo Jerry. The band took part in the in Yugoslavia's first rock festival inZagreb in 1968 and the Split festival later the same year. Theinfluential Drago Mlinarec (vocals and guitar) left the band in 1971,but the group were undaunted, continuing to perform and recordwithout him, leading ultimately to the 1974 release of Slike, asuperb guitar based progressive/acid rock amalgam which hasbecome a major hard psych rarity. Think of the twin lead guitars ofthe Allman Brothers , combined with a heavy Sabbath /Purpleinfluence coupled with some easy west coast sounds and maybeyou'll get the idea. Grupa 220 deliver a solid album reflecting a widerange of musical influences and Slike is an essential purchase fordevotees of heavy world psychTrack Listing1. Slike2. Bijeg3. Zlatna Vrata4.
