Originally privately released on Vernon Wray’s Vermillion Records in 1972, Wasted is a stark and deeply personal meeting point between country rock, folk, blues and homespun American roots music. Vernon, the older brother of pioneering guitarist Link Wray, had already played an important role behind the scenes as a musician, producer and recording engineer. On this rare solo album, however, he stepped fully into the foreground with a collection of intimate and emotionally exposed songs.

The record’s sparse arrangements and deliberately unpolished production give the performances an unusually immediate character. Acoustic guitars, understated piano, restrained percussion and occasional contributions from Link Wray surround Vernon’s weathered voice without overwhelming it. Songs such as “Facing All The Same Tomorrows,” “Lonely Son” and “Prison Song” convey isolation, regret and hard-earned resilience, while the rough edges of the recording strengthen rather than diminish their impact.

Long prized by collectors of private-press recordings and unconventional early-1970s Americana, Wasted feels less like a conventional studio production than a personal document captured at a particular moment in Vernon Wray’s life. This vinyl reissue makes one of the most elusive recordings associated with the remarkable Wray family available again.
