Bonded By Blood is the legendary debut album by San Francisco thrash metal pioneers Exodus, originally released in 1985. Recorded during the formative years of the Bay Area thrash scene, it has become one of the most influential and revered albums in the history of thrash metal.
The classic line-up features Paul Baloff on vocals, Gary Holt and Rick Hunolt on guitars, Rob McKillop on bass and Tom Hunting on drums. Their combination of aggressive riffing, breakneck rhythms and violent yet memorable songwriting established many of the characteristics that would define Bay Area thrash throughout the 1980s.
The opening title track Bonded By Blood remains one of Exodus' defining songs, followed by the furious Exodus, And Then There Were None and the classic A Lesson In Violence. The second side maintains the intensity with Piranha, No Love, the epic Deliver Us To Evil and the explosive closing track Strike Of The Beast.
Although the album was recorded in 1984, contractual and label problems delayed its release until 1985. By then the rapidly developing thrash metal movement was already gaining international momentum, but Bonded By Blood immediately established Exodus as one of the genre's essential bands.
Produced by Mark Whitaker and recorded at Prairie Sun Recording Studios in California, the album's raw but powerful production perfectly captures the energy of early Exodus. It remains the only full-length Exodus studio album to feature Paul Baloff as lead vocalist.
