"Arbeit Macht Frei" was an essential album in the Italian rock of the 70's, full of different influences yet totally original in its sound.

Arbeit Macht Frei (which is German for Work makes you free) is the first album of the band, which was already rich with the fervor and ideas that characterize the production of the group. Musically the band Area denounced the proposal calls for some fairly obvious European jazz and some really progressive rock (Soft Machine, Henry Cow, the School of Canterbury, Gong), but what made the difference was the incredible voice of Demetrio Stratos, tool between instruments.Stratos did not "sing": but "used" his voice pushing into unknown territories, sobbing, whispering & shouting, all in an extremely functional music was influenced by ethnic, free jazz, and rock.
