Limited Gatefold edition 180gr LP

The first album from the English rock group The Soft Machine—named after William S. Burroughs' novel—stands as a pinnacle of the "Canterbury Sound," alongside Caravan. Released in 1968, this exceptional work features the trio comprising Robert Wyatt (handling drums & vocals), Mike Ratledge (managing organ & piano), and Kevin Ayers (overseeing bass, vocals & piano). Notably, it remains the sole album in which Ayers takes center stage within the band. The album introduces additional contributors such as bassist Hugh Hopper, later becoming a permanent member post-Ayers' departure, and the New York City vocal ensemble The Cake. Noteworthy for being among the earliest albums recorded at the renowned Manhattan studios, The Record Plant—established the same year as Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland—The Soft Machine earned a prestigious 5-star rating from reviewer Richie Unterberger on AllMusic. The group's impact resonates as one of the most influential underground bands of its era.
