Born out of the ashes of The Yardbirds, Renaissance underwent quite a transformation during the early Seventies. Following various personnel changes and the arrival of singer Annie Haslam and acoustic guitarist Michael Dunford, the group settled down to develop a unique style that brought together strands of folk, classical and pop music. First released in 1973, 'Ashes Are Burning' features the melodies of Michael Dunford and the lyrics of poet Betty Thatcher. The band established its style with six romantic, yet dynamic compositions augmented by an orchestra - including the title track that became known as the band's anthem. Melodic, cleverly arranged and subtly performed, each of their songs were models of good taste, while imbued with an indefinable magic. The CD notes include an interview with Michael Dunford, who discusses the background to the band and the songs.
