sound. Born out of the ashes of The Yardbirds, Renaissance underwent quite a transformation during
the early Seventies. Following various personnel changes and the arrival of singer Annie
Haslam and acoustic guitarist Michael Dunford, the group settled down to develop a unique
style that brought together strands of folk, classical and pop music.
First released in 1973, 'Ashes Are Burning' features the melodies of Michael Dunford and the
lyrics of poet Betty Thatcher. The band established its style with six romantic, yet dynamic
compositions augmented by an orchestra - including the title track that became known as the
band's anthem. Melodic, cleverly arranged and subtly performed, each of their songs were
models of good taste, while imbued with an indefinable magic.
The CD notes include an interview with Michael Dunford, who discusses the background to the
