Essen 1970 documents East Of Eden live at the 3rd Essen Pop & Blues Festival in the Grugahalle, Essen, on 22 October 1970. The Bristol group were never a straightforward progressive rock band: violin, saxophone and flute were as central to their identity as guitar, bass and drums, giving the music a jazz-rock edge and a restless, exploratory character.
This performance catches the band after Snafu, with Dave Arbus, Jim Roche, David Jack and Jeff Allen pushing the material into a rawer concert setting. The set moves from the long opening Nymphenburger and No Time into In The Stable Of The Sphinx, then closes with To Mrs. V, Crazy Daisy and Ramadhan. This Thors Hammer CD edition comes in a jewel case with a 32-page booklet.
