Join In were formed in Marl, in Germany’s Ruhr region, during the late 1960s. After beginning as a blues-rock group, they gradually absorbed hard rock, progressive music and jazz, eventually developing the flexible fusion sound heard on their only studio album, Kentalope Island.
Originally released in a small edition by the independent Menga label in 1974, the album combines electric piano, organ, saxophone, guitar, bass and drums. The musicians balance tightly arranged themes with open instrumental passages, moving easily between melodic progressive rock, energetic jazz rock and the looser improvisational character associated with the German underground.
“Illusions” opens with an extended sequence of keyboard and saxophone exchanges, while “Do It Yourself” introduces a firmer rock rhythm and expressive guitar work. “Dreams” provides a shorter and more atmospheric contrast before the title track moves through shifting rhythms, melodic keyboard lines and jazz-influenced solos.
“Used To Play” places the emphasis on ensemble interaction and an insistent groove, while “Fliwatüü” closes the original album with playful changes of pace and an unusual combination of progressive-rock structure and jazz improvisation. The recording was engineered by Eroc of Grobschnitt, who helped give the privately produced album a clear and spacious sound.
This expanded Garden of Delights edition was prepared from the master tape and adds eight previously unreleased recordings. The bonus material presents a more spontaneous side of Join In, with longer instrumental passages and extensive improvisation on pieces such as “Bridge Street,” “Chicago Train,” “Listen To The Story” and “Airport Entrance.”
