Rock ’n’ Roll Testament was the third studio album by Berlin group Karthago and marked a move towards a more polished mixture of progressive rock, hard rock, funk and American-influenced songwriting. Guitarist and singer Joey Albrecht wrote most of the music, working closely with American lyricist and vocalist Tom Cunningham.
The album features an especially strong line-up, with former Jethro Tull member Glenn Cornick on bass, Ingo Bischof on keyboards, Konstantin Bommarius on drums and Thomas Goldschmidt supplying the percussion that gives much of the record its distinctive rhythmic character. Albrecht’s guitar ranges from tightly controlled funk figures to extended hard-rock solos, while Bischof adds grand piano, organ and synthesizer.
Recorded at Chipping Norton Studios in Oxfordshire, the album was mixed at AIR Studios in London by celebrated engineer Geoff Emerick. Backing singers Vicki Brown, Barry St. John and Joanne Williams contribute to several tracks, adding a soulful dimension to the group’s heavy instrumental sound.
Highlights include the percussion-driven “Hard-Loving Woman,” the melodic “We Gonna Keep It Together,” the instrumental guitar showcase “The Creeper” and the extended title track. “Highway Five” combines an insistent funk-rock rhythm with one of Albrecht’s strongest solos, while “See You Tomorrow In The Sky” closes the album with a clear tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
