LPCDreissues: Looking forward to the past

Originally released on the Pilz label in 1971, Schmetterlinge was created as music for a ballet staged at the Bonn theatre. Its three connected sections—“Contacts,” “Manifestations” and “Emotions”—use the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly as a musical image for human growth and self-discovery.

Joy Unlimited combine progressive rock with jazz, blues, psychedelia and theatrical ensemble writing. Organ, piano, vibraphone, marimba, brass, woodwinds and guitar create constantly changing textures, while Joy Fleming’s commanding vocals give the shorter song-based passages their distinctive power. This Garden of Delights edition adds four recordings from 1971, including an early radio version of “Neckarbrücken-Blues.”
