Paper Garden were a New York psychedelic group whose only album combined the colourful studio experimentation of the late 1960s with melodic pop songwriting, orchestral arrangements and heavier fuzz-guitar passages. Originally issued by Musicor Records, the album has since become a highly regarded example of American psychedelic and baroque pop.
Rather than relying on a single musical style, the group moves freely between bright vocal harmonies, harpsichord, brass and string arrangements, sitar-like Eastern textures and distorted electric guitar. “Gypsy Wine” opens the album with an immediately memorable psychedelic-pop arrangement, while “Sunshine People” and “Way Up High” introduce a lighter, carefully orchestrated sound.
“Lady’s Man” combines harpsichord and intricate harmonies with concise pop songwriting, while the theatrical “Mr. Mortimer” develops through changing moods and an increasingly elaborate arrangement. The second side becomes more exploratory: “Man Do You” and “Raining” introduce Eastern-influenced rhythms, and “I Hide” contrasts melodic vocals with some of the album’s strongest fuzz guitar.
“Raven” creates a darker psychedelic atmosphere before “A Day” closes the record with a reflective mixture of orchestration and harmony vocals. Ambitious, melodic and consistently inventive, The Paper Garden belongs alongside the finest American responses to the adventurous British psychedelic pop of the period.
This Sundazed edition was mastered from the original Musicor tapes by Bob Irwin, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and presented in a faithful reproduction of the original gatefold sleeve.
