Originally released in 1970, The Time Is Near is one of the strongest albums by the Keef Hartley Band and an outstanding example of early British jazz-rock. Led by drummer Keef Hartley, the group combined blues-based songwriting with brass arrangements, extended improvisation and the increasingly progressive approach developing in British rock at the beginning of the decade.
Much of the album’s character comes from singer, guitarist and principal songwriter Miller Anderson, whose expressive vocals and fluid guitar work are supported by Gary Thain’s inventive bass playing and Hartley’s powerful, economical drumming. Trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, flute, electric piano and organ broaden the sound without overwhelming the songs, creating a flexible mixture of blues rock, jazz, soul and progressive rock.
The concise “Morning Rain” and “From The Window” lead into the ten-minute title track, where Anderson’s guitar and the brass section gradually develop the song into an expansive jazz-rock performance. “You Can’t Take It With You” continues the album’s extended, improvisational approach, while the instrumental “Premonition” highlights Dave Caswell’s writing and brass arrangements. The acoustic “Another Time, Another Place” provides a reflective contrast before “Change” closes the album with a forceful blend of rock rhythm and brass-driven momentum.
