Originally issued as a private pressing in 1975, There Is a Universe is the only album by Probe 10, a progressive jazz-rock group formed by young musicians in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. The band created an ambitious sound from electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, flute, violin and brass instruments, combining the freedom of jazz-rock with psychedelic and space-rock atmospheres.
The title track establishes the album’s cosmic mood through prominent bass, electric piano, horns and effects-treated guitar. The five-part “Invasion of the Malladroids” develops as a compact science-fiction suite, moving from fanfare-like brass passages and uneasy flute melodies to heavier guitar-led sections and a brief closing lament.
“Intergalactic Crossfire” and “Solar Winds” place greater emphasis on instrumental interplay, while “To Improvise a Dream” provides a short, reflective contrast. The closing “Galaxy Five” brings the original album to an expansive conclusion through dense brass arrangements, keyboards and psychedelic guitar.
This Lion Productions edition adds five previously unavailable rehearsal and demo recordings. These include the two-part “The Playing of the Game” and both sections of “Enchanted Mountain,” offering a further glimpse of the group’s adventurous writing and development.
