Dr. Aftershave And The Mixed-Pickles is Missus Beastly’s third album and one of the strongest examples of the band’s later jazz-rock direction. By 1976 the group had moved far from their early psychedelic roots, developing a looser, mostly instrumental sound shaped by flute, saxophone, keyboards, bass and fluid rhythmic playing.
The album has a warm, exploratory character, with tracks such as Miles All Along The Watchtower, High Life, Morning Sun and Patscha Menga Underground showing the band’s connection to the German fusion underground around Embryo, Ton Steine Scherben and the April label. This Garden Of Delights CD edition adds two bonus tracks, Slow One (Stoppt Strauß) and For Flü, taken from Vlotho festival recordings.
